Spring forward!

2026 is under way.

2026 is rolling.

The American president just can’t stop. He can’t help himself. Some things remain the same. The wars. The betrayal. The disregard for the working people. The machine hums on.

So far 2026 has been about support. I have been busy, helping folks close to me. I am working at school five days a week once again, not quite full time. The kids have written a play! We will perform that in April. I performed with Valeska at the 2026 Crankie festival in February. We premiered Toad Eyes. We got to do it again at the Theater Project at the beginning of March.

The biggest push this year, so far, has been for the Move Move Collaborative. This year will mark the 10th cohort. There have been two workshops already and a third on the way, before we gather for the intensive. I am really looking forward to what we make this year. I have been looking back at the videos from the Focus Group Tour of An Exercise in Entertainment. I did work in progress showings in four cities to see how different arrangements worked out. I will return to this project. I am going to do some planning and actual rehearsing and working with other people to make it pop! I want it to really read like a show.

Wrapping another year, almost - it was a big one.

In July of 2024 - Valeska Populoh and I got married! (the clip above was taken by Tom Reid.)

It was quite a celebration. Lithuanian Hall in Baltimore City came alive with people from across our lives. Family and friends gathered to bear witness to our commitment to each other facilitated by Mama Rashida. It was a joyous day. I am full of gratitude for all the people that helped make it happen. It was the highlight of my year.

This is a photo from the latest version of An Exercise in Entertainment, I am calling it Volume 3. I returned to this piece this fall. It feels good to move it along. Check the video in the Project section to see some moving images of the October version. Hope to get it in front of a few more focus groups early in 2025.

September is showtime

Remember that time that I raced all comers!!!

While the equinox is a couple weeks away, the turning of the planet is being felt here in Maryland. The air is crisper and the light is a little more blue. Feels like fall. The social calendar feels like fall, too. There are lots of incredible shows coming up. I am honored to be part of a couple of them.

This episode’s theme is Labor, Lapse, and Error. I will be puppeteering Valeska Populoh’s moving piece titled Groundswell Spell. September 10th - Mind on Fire show

EN ROUTE is a string trio made up of Erin Snedecor, Kimia Hesabi, and Ami Nasseri. They're performing new art music by Missy Mazzoli, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Carlos Bandera. Orlando Johnson and I will be moving, dancing even, to the sounds.

October 7th - Yours and Mine Opening

Packed show with puppets, song and dance centering chosen family. An art show with A whole host of folks - Sarah Stakauskus, John Herndon, Carrie Lee, Alee Peoples, Alicia Adams, Antonio Beecroft, Mary Brogger, and Kate Roberson - and the people that they see as their chosen family. Music by Jeff Parker, Dance by Bill Prudich and Sasha Loziak with a score by Ralph Darden, puppetry by Eli Presser and Micheal Serwich. I am honored to be a guest artist on this bill.

Spring blooms, look out!

This year the trees are stunning here in Baltimore and life is blooming.

My work as a teaching artist has been inspiring this time around. Grateful for all the community of students and families at City Neighbors Charter School. I got to work with a group of kids who wrote a dynamic school drama - Duck Swap - that we worked on together to make into a full blown play. It was a hoot.

In April, I am setting up to perform in Baltimore and in a few towns south of here: Atlanta, Richmond, and Asheville. These shows are going to be a mix of PROP series work and doing some tests with new material. On the 4th, I will be in Asheville doing a house show with the magical being - Valeska Populoh. We will be sharing a bill with Majid Araim and Lucifer Arias among others at No Tomorrow Underground in Atlanta on April 5th. We will kick around ATL for a couple days and then make our way to Richmond for a house show on the 8th. On the 11th, the Breath of the Maji returns! This is primarily a musical project with Orlando Johnson and Che Davis. We will be playing in Baltimore at 2640 Space on St. Paul. We will be accompanied by two ensembles from Atlanta - Majid Araim and Monique Osorio & Lucifer Arias, Priscilla Smith, and Ray Swinn. This is going to be a singular night of avant garde expression.

On April 15th - Move Move Collaborative will be presenting a dance lecture at The Invisible Architecture conference at Towson University. Cristal Sabbagh, Ashley Shey, and Emmett Wilson will be coming into town for the presentation. I am honored to be in the company of the inspiring artists and thinkers sharing their work.

In May, I will be bringing forward some ideas that I started to tinker with at Donna Oblongata’s Introduction to Pochinko clowning class. It was an inspiring synthesis of many threads of this body mind. Keep your eyes open for a solo show at the amazing Rhizome DC on May 19th, the May 20th Puppet Slam co-hosted between Black Cherry Puppet Theater and The Current Space. Another ensemble show will happen on May 22nd at Comptoir du Vin - John Dierker, Khristian Weeks and myself will play a set alongside Bonnie Lander.

I hope to cross paths with you somewhere along this journey.

Support local artists

I am excited to have been selected to be one of the inaugural DC Arts CSA (Community Supported Arts) cohort. This program is jointly administered by Rhizome DC and GUILDED a freelance artists collective. There are nine artists from across the DMV creative community in the cohort. Each is offering a piece for the project. The community members who purchase a ‘share’ will receive one piece from each artist.

I am producing 50 copies of an expanded edition of Natural Score. This edition will only be available through the CSA. Shares are on sale now.

Here we go!

Into a future that we create together. The same as every year. It does not feel like other years, though. It feels precious and precarious and powerful and pointless and profound. The Great Re-tuning that got started in 2020, may it continue! May we stay focused on how we can support each other in manners as yet unattained!

To the horizontal! Hip HIP - hurray! To the small ‘d’ democratic! Hip HIP ~ Hurray!

For the next two weeks, I am disabling the support mode, while I reconfigure and recalibrate. Thank you to all of you who have supported me this year. It has moved me.

During the Voluminous Arts Halloquium, I reflected on what the current Sacred Pause has offered me. As a performing artist, the pandemic season has been one of contributing to mutual aid and assistance in my community, as well as considering how I want my work to move in the world. In response, I have been tinkering with ways to connect with people virtually. Online classes are underway, and there has been the occasional virtual performance. I still pine for actual audiences that can smell the same scents as me. I have a running joke with Valeska Populoh about the world tour we will undertake in 2025. I must be patient.

I am a fortunate being with access to many resources that have fed my spirit and my body and continue to sustain me financially making it possible for me to pursue my art making. After all, I am a white middle-aged man whose ex-wife made financially sound plans and family remains generous. However, I seek to expand my roots.

I am working to gather resources to continue my work. This print sale is a way to share one of my visual bodies of work, The Half Full Series, and sell them directly to people who would like to support me. There are two other projects in the works. One is a chapbook of poetry, and the other is a visual and text essay that will launch a subscription service in January. Stay tuned!

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me over the last three years to do the work that calls me. The work goes on.

It has been a minute, or eights months, since I have participated in a performance where the audience and the performers can smell each other.
